Businessman Sergei Andronov and his housekeeper were shot dead in their apartment. At the same time, Andronov's younger brother, Andrei, 35, autistic and a brilliant mathematician, was in one of the rooms of the apartment and, possibly, saw the killer. The investigation is aided by Olga Barkovskaya, with whom Andrei communicates using mathematical formulas. Andrei himself, the murdered wife Albin, the former friend Ilya Riman and the husband of the murdered housekeeper Stukalov are under suspicion.
