Old Odessa. After serving a year in prison for hooliganism, Andrei returns to the shipyard and begins an honest working life. But his biography becomes a bait for the thief and recidivist Greni, who has been operating in these parts for many years. Soon Andrei's friends and girlfriend will find out that he has been detained by the police and is suspected of stealing. The case is being conducted by the investigator of the criminal investigation department Braytsev and his sympathies are clearly on the side of the young man. Step by step, Braytsev unravels a complex tangle of evidence and conjectures that lead him to the famous swindler Greni.
