The Caribbean is often associated with fascinating landscapes and a turbulent history. For scientists around the world, these seven thousand islands aligned like a string of pearls, from South America to the east coast of the United States, represent much more than simple postcard images. Biodiversity is so rich there that 72% of the eleven thousand Caribbean plant species are endemic. But this region is far from calm: at the geological level, it is a “hot spot”, that is to say that volcanic activity is regular there. The Caribbean islands are not spared neither earthquakes nor cyclones with devastating effects.
