The famous and popular Parisian lawyer Dr. For a long time, Cenodoxus stood unnoticed in the center of a vortex of opposing forces. Heaven and hell fight with all their might about his conflicted soul, which strives for knowledge, but which lacks the meritorious concern of a wise man. So Cenodoxus creates no less good than bad in life, but his own advantage always remains the drive for all his work. In order to further this self-love, hell first sends the devil Philautia and finally Hypocrisis as lover into the lawyer's house. Meanwhile, Cenodoxus' conscience speaks against the devilish whisper in the form of the young woman Magda on behalf of heaven for a better life. So the soul and mind of the "Doctor of Paris" are thrown back and forth until he is almost insane. But before the tug-of-war can come to a conclusion, the old demon Morbus appears.
