Elena is 12 years old and lives in Ecuador, in the highlands of the Andes. Since her mother died, she has lived with her eldest sister's family. Before she goes to sleep, her grandfather tells her the old legends of the Otavalenos - about the two great mountains, about the milk tree or about the white cat. Elena's best friend is called Janet.
