In April 2012, night fell on Timbuktu: from northern Mali and the desert, the jihadists of Ansar Dine invaded the city and made terror reign. Not content with imposing (especially on women) a dictatorship calling for Sharia law and the rejection of the Western way of life, the armed group is also attacking the culture and history of the city. A former great Arab-African spiritual center which reached its peak in the 15th and 16th centuries, and a commercial crossroads at the crossroads of many cultures, Timbuktu embodies what Islamist militiamen cannot stand: mixing, knowledge and tolerance. Destroying many mausoleums, they mainly threaten libraries and their inestimable treasures, secular manuscripts, bearers of the memory of the country.
