On November 18, 1969, a Portuguese paratrooper force wounded and captured Cuban captain Pedro Peralta during an ambush in southern Guinea. The ambush was intended to intercept a PAIGC column that, according to information if informants from the Lisbon Government infiltrated the Movement of Amílcar Cabral, would lead guerrilla commander Nino Vieira to Conakry.
