Duchess Leda Orlonia returns home from a masquerade ball accompanied by her admirer Mario Barbarini. In her boudoir she suddenly finds herself face to face with the escaped prisoner Guido Cavalcanti. He swears his innocence to the Duchess and they fall in love. He then kills Barbarini in a duel for her favor. Cavalcanti does not know, however, that his new lover is a femme fatale, who has already ruined many a man.
