One hundred and fifty years ago, on September 2, 1870, Napoleon III capitulated in shame at Sedan. The resurgent Republic, to impose itself, must write a new national novel, notably around the heroization of the soldier and the desire for revenge. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870, short and brutal, in addition to founding the balance of power in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century, became a factory of myths for the Republican memory emerging from the ruins of the Empire.
