In 1800, Bonaparte launches a great expedition to the still poorly known Austral Lands, under the command of Nicolas Baudin. Two hundred men, including about forty scientists and several draughtsmen, embarked on two ships for a risky voyage lasting several years. The official aim was to develop scientific and cartographic knowledge of what was then called "New Holland" and "Van Diemen's Land", Australia and Tasmania respectively. For the botanist Francis Hallé, walking through these same spaces more than two centuries later is like plunging into the observation of a fascinating and sometimes even immortal nature with the same scientific passion and graphic talent...
