Between 1941 and 1944, thousands of petitions from Jews or relatives of victims of persecution were addressed to the General Commission for Jewish Affairs or transmitted to it by Marshal Pétain. The administration first pretends to examine and respond to them. Then from June 1942, it systematically discards itself behind the occupying authorities. These letters are so many fragments of life and stories of upset intimacies. Beyond the drama constituted by these individual situations, they distinctly reflect the evolution of the persecution, its processes, its effects, and highlight the inexorable spiral in which the victims were caught.
