After dating for 12 years, Guido and Charlotte break up aggressively. Charlotte's father, a General in pajamas, concerned about his daughter's mental health, goes to take his leave of Guido. Still not used to the sudden fame of his first book, Guido is pressured by his literary agent to deliver his new book on the date promised by the contract. Through the writer's imagination, the film describes the creative process of his new literary work, where Guido himself sees himself as a character in his book - a poet involved in absurd situations in a war and in a court of law.
