In 1982, when the Cold War was at its height, Samantha Smith, a ten-year-old American, wrote to the secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Yuri Andropov, to ask him to cease hostilities with her country. He invites him to come and visit the USSR.
