Latvian riflemen in St. Petersburg during the Civil War. Jezupas Gaidulis' spiritual conviction does not allow him to take up arms, and therefore the Revolutionary Committee sends it together with the rifleman Jānis Rudzāts to show cinemas in rural areas and to campaign for joining the Red Army. The first clash with bandits is already on the way. The leader of the bandits is the clergy, Father Arseny, who tells Joseph, who captured him, "You will not be slaughtered." Jezups sets it free.
